B.A. (Honours) Economics

Quantitative training inside a humanities degree — the combination most in demand for analyst and policy roles.

Economics honours sits between the arts and the sciences, and that is precisely its advantage. You read about institutions, policy and history like a humanities student, and you handle data, models and statistics like a science student. Employers hiring analysts look for exactly that overlap.

The programme carries a compulsory data-handling component: every student learns spreadsheet modelling in the second year and basic statistical work in R in the third. Our graduates have used that skill to enter banking, market research, government statistical services and postgraduate programmes at Delhi and Panjab University.

Who Can Apply

Pass in 10+2 with 50% aggregate. Mathematics at 10+2 level is strongly preferred and is required to opt for the econometrics electives.

Admission is granted strictly on the merit of the qualifying examination, following the reservation policy of the Government of Haryana. There is no capitation or donation charge of any kind.

Programme Highlights

What Makes This Course Different

Questions

Frequently Asked About This Course

You can, and the department runs a bridge module in the first semester covering the algebra and calculus you will need. Be aware that the econometrics papers in year three are genuinely mathematical, and students without a maths background have to work considerably harder there.

Roughly a third of the credits. Mathematical methods and statistics are compulsory, and econometrics in the final year uses regression analysis. It is far less mathematics than a B.Sc., and far more than a general B.A.

Microsoft Excel to an advanced level — pivot tables, lookup functions, regression add-in and dashboards — and basic R for statistical work. Both are taught in the computer centre with a system per student.

They lead to the same examinations. Economics gives you stronger analytical and reasoning preparation; B.Com. gives you stronger accounting and practical finance. If you enjoy reasoning-based questions, choose economics.
